In late August of 2001 when we heard of an exceptionally clean 1975 Bronco that was for sale here locally...I talked her into at least taking a test drive with me... I let her take the first trip down the road in the drivers seat... That lasted all of about 100 yards... she couldn’t get the transmission in third gear (the pattern was too tight)??? She pulled over and I jumped in it for my driving experience. I drove the Bronco back to Ken’s house and told him we needed a few days to talk it over (some of you guys know what I’m talking about). Several days later I had called Ken Back to dicker on his asking price, he said he was firm and wouldn’t drop it one red cent. I politely told him it was out of our price range, and he told me that It was probably sold anyway, someone else was out taking a test drive. I was bummed when I hung up the phone and my wife just smirked and said ‘you know you can’t Have them all’. Then in late Oct I went to my Monday night Bowling League, spent the usual 3 hours trying to throw that perfect game, I got home from Bowling and after some T.V. settled in for a semi-good nights sleep (my 6 month old daughter was sleeping in her crib in our room). Tuesday morning was going to be just another day in Paradise and my Birthday to boot; I was heading out the door for work when I noticed my shop door was open!!! Crazy things were going thru my head at this moment like I’ve been robbed or some off the wall thing like that. I made a beeline out to my shop to see what was going on. My wife and daughter were right behind me. When I got out there to see what was up, I opened the garage door and **BAM** my wife just started laughing when my jaw hit the floor... she said “You should see the look on your face!!!” This Baytree Green Bronco was setting back in my shop, with a big bow on the hood and several balloons setting inside of it…

This whole Bronco bad habit started in the summer of 1983, I worked my first full summer as a painters helper for our local School District to earn enough money to help pay for my first set of wheels. It was a 1970 Bronco ‘Sport’ that I bought from my Grandfather who owned Harlow’s Auto Repair in Whitefish, Mt. Then in 1984 while some buddies and myself were attending Junior “ditch day,” I had a little mishap with my Father’s 1969 Half cab, I ended up with some front end damage trying to tow a friends car back to town after she had taken out several feet of guardrail at Lake Lahontan. After taking my license and making me pay for the repairs, my parents were pretty cool about the whole thing. On my 17th Birthday they traded my 70 fulltop for their 69 halfcab, and to this day I still have that Bronco. |

After High School my Uncle John, who owned a paint and body shop, painted my Bronco as a graduation gift. After College I moved back home to get a real job and think about settling down [NOT]. In 1988 I applied for my first personnel loan and bought two 1977 Bronco’s just a few miles from my house. I was now the proud owner of three early Bronco’s, Shortly after buying the 77’s, I sold one of them to pay off my loan. I didn’t buy another Bronco until sometime in 1992, but since 1994 I have kept a ‘Black Book’ of Early Bronco’s that have come and gone. To date I’ve had 108 complete Bronco’s, 44 wrecked Bronco’s and 32 non running parts Bronco’s along with truck loads of individual parts and pieces. When time and money permit these days we try and fix up a couple of Bronco’s a year to make room for more projects. We also have a personal collection (that’s not for sale) we have acquired over the years. The first being my 69 half cab. |

This one we call the ‘Classic’ it is a 1968 Peacock Blue Bronco We were traveling to Coalinga, CA to pick up yet another parts Bronco and on our return trip back through Lone Pine, CA my wife spotted a rolled Orange Bronco sitting in this guy’s back yard... I found a wide spot in the road and turned around. I went to the door, we talked about his Bronco and how he had just wrecked it several days before, his Bronco was not for sale but his Uncle Dave had one across the street, he said it was ‘pretty’ clean and it was for sale. The Bronco was under two car covers when we walked in, after the covers came off I opened the drivers door to check out the mileage, I actually think my jaw hit the front seat. The odometer read 16,001. I asked if these were actual miles and he handed me a manila envelope with all the documentation they had on the Bronco.

All I can say is that I was in awe of what I was looking at. We covered the Bronco back up because Dave [his uncle] was out of town for a few days. I headed back to my truck and trailer and went on my way, with wife and In-laws in tow. I didn’t say much for the first few miles, I think I was still in shock... finally I started blubbering everything I could remember in detail about the Bronco. My In-laws piped up and said they would loan us the money to buy it if that’s what we wanted. I told them that I would like to bring my Father back with me so he could look it over and give me his opinion. It was several days before we could get our schedules worked out and finally we made the trip South to have a second look. This time I actually got to drive the Bronco around the block and put a whole mile on it. After we got back to Dave’s house, my Father was crawling out from underneath it and pulled me off to the side to have a little one on one. He said, “This is the second cleanest Bronco that I have ever seen, (the first cleanest was the one your Mom and I bought New in 1968)”... so with that said I felt good about making an offer on the Bronco...Dave and I came to terms and we trailered the ‘Classic’ home. As of today, July 2004 our Bronco has 16,158 miles on it, we have driven it to a few parades locally, taken it to Hot August Nights a couple times, and to a Bronco gathering in Sparks, NV in 2002... [See the original sales sheet on it]... I have the original tires and wheels, hubcaps and every piece of paperwork/documentation that came with this Bronco since 1968 (it is now on it’s 5th oil change) I really do like to show it when people come over to talk Bronco’s at our little ‘Bronco Hideaway.” |
